Position Title: Controller
Location: Buffalo, NY (in-office; no remote/hybrid)
Compensation: $95,000 - $150,000/year

Our client is a growing construction company in the Western NY market, operating across multiple sectors, all with union trades.

Job Summary
The Controller will work with ownership to ensure GAAP-compliant financial reports and maintain communication with the company's outside accounting vendor for quarterly and year-end reviews. This role leads a team of accountants and provides financial oversight of project managers, reporting to ownership on financial issues and giving honest assessments of company financial status to support strategic decision-making.

Key Accountabilities

• Oversee all financial and accounting aspects of the company
• Balance bank accounts and general ledger daily
• Ensure proper cash flow through review of accounts payable and accounts receivable reports
• Maintain banking relationships
• Provide financial outlook reports to advise on strategic decision-making
• Review all Work In Progress (WIP) reports for construction projects to ensure accuracy and identify financial issues
• Work with project managers and division managers to review project budgets and ensure proper cost controls; analyze the company and projects to identify irregularities
• Ensure general company compliance with government, bank, and customer financial reporting requirements
• Lead a team of roughly 7 accounting team members
• Mentor junior accounting team members to encourage growth and development
• Ensure all payroll, benefits, and tax payments are made as required
• Review insurance coverages for compliance and cost-effectiveness (company participates in a Captive program for GL, Workers Comp, and Auto)

Requirements

• Experience with accounting software for financial tracking and reporting (training provided on company's specific system if needed)

Education & Experience

• Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (CPA not required)
• 5+ years of progressive accounting experience, including leadership roles
• Construction accounting experience strongly preferred; other public or private accounting experience also considered

Work Environment
Office of approximately 17 team members including ownership, project managers, and accounting staff. The Controller's office is separate and central to the accounting team. This is a fully in-person role; no remote or hybrid work available.
