Job Title: Controller - Construction
On-Site - $95,000 - $125,000
Position Overview
The Controller will be responsible for overseeing all accounting and financial operations for a growing, commercial construction business. This individual will play a hands-on role in maintaining accurate financial records, managing day-to-day accounting functions, supporting project financials, and ensuring compliance across payroll, contracts, and HR administration.
This role is ideal for a self-directed accounting professional who thrives in a small business environment, is comfortable wearing multiple hats, and can operate with minimal supervision while serving as a trusted financial partner to ownership.
Key Responsibilities
Accounting & Financial Management
• Maintain clean, accurate books in accordance with GAAP and industry best practices
• Perform monthly reconciliations and manage the month-end close process
• Prepare monthly profit & loss statements and support financial reporting needs
• Maintain and manage Work in Progress (WIP) schedules
• Partner with external CPAs to support monthly and annual closeouts
Accounts Payable / Receivable & Payroll
• Manage full-cycle accounts payable and accounts receivable
• Oversee expense tracking and job cost allocation
• Process payroll, including certified payroll and union reporting
• Manage union remittances, benefits administration, and related filings
Project & Contract Support
• Set up new contracts and projects within the accounting system
• Review contracts for financial and administrative accuracy, including insurance and sales tax documentation
• Assist with contract redlining as needed
• Monitor project financials and identify potential red flags or inconsistencies
HR & Administrative Support
• Maintain employee records, including OSHA cards and compliance documentation
• Prepare and submit certified payroll reports
• Manage SIMPLE IRA contributions and related employee benefit administration
• Support general office needs, including ordering supplies and handling ad hoc administrative tasks
Required Qualifications
• Prior experience as a Controller, Assistant Controller, or Sr. Accounting Role
• Background in construction or project-based accounting
• Familiarity with certified payroll and union environments
• Strong understanding of accounting principles and monthly reconciliation processes
• Experience preparing P&Ls, WIP schedules, and supporting CPA relationships
• Hands-on experience with AR/AP, payroll, and expense management
• High attention to detail with a strong sense of ownership and accountability
• Ability to work independently in a fast-moving, small business environment
